It occurs when a specific digit can only be placed in exactly ONE cell within a house (row, column, or 3×3 block), even if that cell currently has multiple other potential candidates written in it.

Hidden Singles vs. Naked Singles: What is the Difference?

Understanding the distinction between Naked and Hidden singles is crucial for progressing beyond beginner puzzles:

  • Naked Single (Cell-Centric): A cell has only one possible candidate because all other 8 digits (1-9 except one) are already present in its intersecting row, column, and block. The cell is "naked" because only one digit can physically fit.
  • Hidden Single (House-Centric): A cell might have three or four possible candidate numbers (e.g., candidates 2, 5, 8). However, when you inspect the entire 3×3 block or row, no other cell in that house can accept a 5. Thus, the 5 is "hidden" among other notes, but is forced into this exact cell.

Step-by-Step Technique: How to Find Hidden Singles

  1. Target an Unplaced Number: Pick a number that appears frequently across the puzzle, but is missing in a specific 3×3 block or column.
  2. Trace Intersecting Rays: Look at the rows and columns that cut through your target block. If another block in that same horizontal band already has that digit, draw a mental line blocking that entire row across your target block.
  3. Count Remaining Free Cells: If after blocking all conflicting rows and columns only a single cell in the block can hold the digit, you have found a Hidden Single! Place the digit immediately and erase all other candidate notes from that cell.

Hidden Singles in Rows and Columns (The Unseen Dimension)

While most beginners learn to spot Hidden Singles inside 3×3 boxes, the majority of intermediate players stall because they overlook Hidden Singles that occur along Rows and Columns.

When scanning a column, you are not looking at what numbers a cell can hold. Instead, you ask: "Where in this entire 9-cell vertical column can a 4 go?" If seven cells are either filled or intersect horizontal rows that already contain a 4, then even if the eighth cell contains candidate pencil marks like {2, 4, 7, 8}, the 4 is pinned to that cell. Recognizing row and column hidden singles is the single fastest way to break open stubborn Hard puzzles.

Let us walk through a practical scenario in Column 3:

  • Column 3 currently has 4 filled cells and 5 empty cells (R2C3, R4C3, R5C3, R7C3, R8C3).
  • We are searching for where digit 6 must go in Column 3.
  • Row 2 already has a 6, so R2C3 is blocked.
  • Row 4 already has a 6, so R4C3 is blocked.
  • The 3×3 box containing R7C3 and R8C3 already has a 6 placed in R9C1, so neither R7C3 nor R8C3 can be 6.
  • Out of all 5 empty cells in Column 3, exactly one cell remains unblocked: R5C3!
  • Even if R5C3 has notes {1, 3, 6}, the 6 is completely forced. We enter 6 into R5C3 immediately.

Pointing Pairs (Locked Candidates): The Bridge to Advanced Logic

Often, a digit is not yet a Hidden Single, but its candidates within a 3×3 box are restricted to a single row or column. This phenomenon is called a Pointing Pair (or Locked Candidates Type 1):

  • If candidate 8 only appears in two cells within Box 1, and both of those cells lie on Row 2, then the 8 for Box 1 must occupy one of those two cells on Row 2.
  • Consequently, the digit 8 cannot appear anywhere else along Row 2 in Box 2 or Box 3!
  • By eliminating 8s from the rest of Row 2, you frequently create a brand new Hidden Single in Box 2 or Box 3.

  • Scan by House Rather than Cell: When you are playing against opponents in real-time matchmaking, asking "Where can a 9 go in this box?" is much faster than inspecting empty cells one by one.
  • Watch for Chain Reactions: Placing a Hidden Single immediately reduces candidate options in all neighboring houses, frequently creating a cascade of new Naked and Hidden singles.
  • Use Digit Highlighting: In the Multiplayer Sudoku interface, clicking any number on the numeric keypad or board highlights all occurrences of that digit across the entire 81-cell grid. This makes scanning intersecting rays effortless.
